What is the difference between NYSE and Dow stocks?

NYSE stocks are a large number of the biggest and most well established companies including ways to trade many similar foreign stocks. The S&P 500 are the largest in some sense American stocks and are almost all traded on the NYSE. The DOW stocks are a small subset, 30ish, large stocks and are mostly a subset of the S&P 500.

Why is the NYSE and the DOW so important?

New York is undeniably the financial nerve centre of the world and NYSE and the Dow are undoubtedly its biggest. The Dow is an index and the NYSE is an exchange, a place where people come to trade, i.e. to buy and to sell. The Dow gives an indication as to how the market is doing since it averages the 30 top blue chip stocks of the economy.
